Barbie Doll Cake- How to Make it at Home

Barbie Doll Cake
My daughter turned 5 recently and demanded a Barbie Doll Cake.
This is a simple cake to make at home and you don't have to be a professional at cake decorating.Actually you don't even need to know how to bake a cake !
Materials Required

  • 2 Cakes : Bake or buy
    • Shape of cake:Use round shaped cakes .We used a flower shaped baking tin for the lower cake but it is hardly visible.
    • Size:It is best and easiest to have one cake larger than the other-If you bake equal sized cakes you will need to do quite a bit of carving!
    • Type of Cake:It is better to use plain ones without much fruit and nuts as you need to do a little shaping and fruit or nut cakes tend to crumble
  • Sharp Knife
  • Doll of appropriate size -The doll needs to go partly into the cake so choose the doll accordingly
  • Icing of choice- We prefer butter icing at home but fondant icing gives a real professional look
How to Make your Homemade Barbie Doll Cake
Layer both your cakes one on top of the other. Here we have used a plain vanilla cake on top and chocolate cake at the bottom[Reason: My husband gets migraine with chocolate so the plain vanilla cake is for him!]
Shape the sides of the smaller cake to get the gentle slope of a Barbie Doll's dress. Its fairly easy if you use a long sharp knife .
Sandwich the cakes together with a thin layer of icing[This is an optional step-the bottom cake will taste sweeter with a layer of icing]

Insert your Barbie doll into the top of the cake.If your doll is too tall and looks awkward- remove the legs[with permission from the daughter of the house- my daughter was horrified when I discussed this and we had to make her birthday cake 3 cakes tall to help hold the complete Barbie!]The 2 photos above are of a doll cake we made last September. This time I did not remember to take more photos of the making as it was a hurry burry job but you can see how tall the cake is.
How to Make a Barbie cake
Ice and embellish the cake to give Barbie a nice frilled dress.First apply a generous base layer of Butter icing before you start with the flowers and edible silver beads
Barbie Cake
There are so many accomplished bakers and cake decorating professionals out there and the only reason I am posting this amateur work is to encourage other homemakers like myself  to make this cake at home as its super fun and easy.
