Lolly stick Craft

At our home we are big hoarders of so called junk!Recently when my nut cutter broke we thought instead of throwing it away we would recycle it into a Popsicle stick Pen stand. Ice cream stick or Popsicle stick craft is a super fun craft to do with kids.Here sharing a tutorial to make a fun Popsicle ladybird and Popsicle Owl.

Here is my broken nut cutter base which we recycled.

Apply white glue generously and stick the Popsicle sticks as shown

Paint the body of the popsicle ladybird red-- with young children mark a horizontal line to guide them for painting

Decide how many icecream sticks you need for the head and paint them black. Here is my 5 year old painting her lolly sticks using black poster colors.

Apply glue on the body and attach your black painted lollysticks

To complete the ladybird you can add googly eyes, some black painted lolly stick antennae and of course some black paper circles for the spots.Our black spots were punched from a magazine cover.

On the other side of the nut cutter we decided to make an owl- I was thinking in terms of a simple pattern but my daughter wanted a rounded head with proper owlish triangular shaped ears and big eyes! So here is her owl popsicle design [only the owl wing is my idea rest is my 5 year old's design!]

How to make a lolly stick Owl

Cut one popsicle stick a centimeter shorter than the other 2 and glue it at an angle as shown.Attach the other 2 popsicle sticks above to give a wing shape.Be generous with white glue in this Popsicle stick craft.

My daughter wanted to give her owl golden wings.When working with young children mark the area you want painted-as shown by the vertical golden line on the right wing as shown in the photos of this popsicle stick craft.

Apply glue and layer lolly sticks vertically over the wings as shown to make your popsicle owl's body.

Since my daughter wanted a roundish owl's face I had to cut and position the lolly sticks to give the resemblance of a rounded face!

This can be achieved by cutting away centers of the lolly stick and sticking them end to end as shown below. Make the triangular ears by positioning 2 cut ends as shown.Here we stuck the lolly sticks for the face on a cardboard box and later cut away the excess cardboard

My daughter has very strong opinions  about her art and craft projects and most of the time I allow her to make decisions- she wanted a brown owl body

Stick the head on the body , add a beak and eyes and you have a pretty sweet Popsicle Owl!

We stuck hand cut leaves at the base of our new pen stand.The back of the owls wings are also painted golden to act as the ladybirds wings too!

Our Owls head is much bigger than the lady bird so I had to stick some leaves on the back of the owl's head so that our pen stand would look OK viewed from the lady bird's side too.
