| Boat Pop Up Card Tutorial |
When I started card making ,I loved making pop up cards as you didnt really need many supplies to make them and even a simple card had a WOW factor !Now that I have more crafty stuff to play with I am trying to incorporate techniques like die cutting, dry and heat embossing into pop up card making!This Boat pop up card is called a 180 degree pop up card as the pop-up mechanism becomes truly 3 D on opening the card flat at 180 degrees!

I made the background of my pop up card by using distress inks and heat embossing the same flourish stamp I used in the
Paper Daffodil tutorial [Ha Ha I don't own that many stamps!]

I kept the front very simple , just added 2 pattern papers ,2 starfish and a heat embossed " 9 lives" [ my first stamp - a gift from blogger pal Romina and which I confess I am using for the first time!]

I know many card makers shy away from making pop up cards but I am especially encouraged by the enthusiastic response to my
Lever Pop up Card Tutorial and hence sharing a step by step tutorial to make this Boat Pop up card ---trust me though it looks complicated
it's much easier than the Lever Pop up card tutorial !!
I designed this pop up card based on mechanisms from Duncan Birmingham's Pop up design book

The whole mechanism of the pop up card is based on the
central pop up box you create. Take 2 card strips
4 x 1 1/2 inches and score at 1/2, 1 1/2, 2 1/2 , and 3 1/2 inches.Snip off triangles on the 1/2 inch parts on the sides to create gluing tabs as shown in the pictorial above. I trimmed the tabs to make them less than 1/2 inch to make gluing easier.

Fold the strips at each score line and apply glue to one tab and stick firmly to the center fold of a folded A 4 card as shown- the tab should align perfectly snugly with the center and give enough time for it to dry.Now fold the strip to the opposite as shown, apply glue to the tab and fold the card closed.

On opening you will have created a pop up box mechanism!You can glue on a central shaft for the ship's masts if you wish to the vertical surface at the central fold

Fold the other card strip and apply glue to the tab and adjacent part as shown and stick to the central fold line and the vertical surface of the pop up box you had already created.

Fold over the whole pop up mechanism to the opposite side, close the card and allow enough time to dry. On opening voila your central pop up box is complete.

To make the sides of the boat is even easier.Take 2 card strips [I challenged my pop up making skills by embossing the strips in wood grain --embossed cards are always more difficult to stick!] 5 3/4 x 1 3/4 and 6 3/4 x 1 3/4. Make gluing tabs by scoring and snipping off triangles on the outer 1/2 inches of the longer strip.If you wish you can cut off some bits from the top of the strips to give a gentle curve like I have done here in my pop up ship design.

Stick the central part of the shorter strip onto the vertical surface of the central pop up mechanism.Apply glue to one gluing tab of the longer strip and stick to one end of the shorter strip as shown - you will have formed the bow [front part] of the ship!

Apply glue on the vertical surface of the central pop up mechanism and the other gluing tab of the long strip and stick as marked by the arrows in the pictorial.

Your pop up card is ready. The key to success in making this pop up card is not being impatient while sticking the parts and giving enough time for the glue to dry!

ReplyDeleteSnehal I forgot to add about the flag actually! I added a shaft using ivory card stock for sturdiness and then stuck gold pattern paper on either side of the shaft and then a golden die cut flag using the Spellbinders Majestic labels 25. And a big Thank you for liking the pop up card!!

ReplyDeleteShalu pop up cards are challenging to make - you need to be accurate and patient!! Start with pop up card tutorials with templates such as from Robert Saubda's site and then progress to more difficult ones and you will be soon making pop up designs of your own one day!
