Rainbow Faux Cake

Faux Cake
Dear friends I am almost embarrassed to post this rather childish looking creation! This started off as a cardboard box I had grand plans to recycle into something cheerful and happy to hang on the wall. I thought I would go with the rainbow theme and it all began well but somewhere along the way some immature child within myself took control and all went a bit awry!!
Well now that I have admitted my "unhappiness" with this project I hope you can find something "happy" to look at on this "Faux Cake" wall hanging!
Embossed Butterfly
The elegant golden water-colored butterflies are perhaps a salvage point...they look gorgeous !!
Embossed Butterfly
I guess watercoloring all the beautiful colorful butterflies unleashed  the "unrestrained" impish child in me and I couldn't help adding color everywhere!!
Inlaid Die cutting
The "Happy" lies flat on the central Spellbinders die cut using the  "Inlaid die cutting" technique I explained in this post : Altered Box.
Rainbow Butterflies
Oodles of dazzling rainbow colors everywhere on this one!! Even the pattern papers I chose have rainbow colors!
Golden Embossed Butterfly
The pink "icing" you see on the border of my box / cake was made with collage clay ,a type of soft air drying clay from Plaid [the makers of ModPodge] It comes in a piping bag with different styles of nozzle and you can pipe it just like real icing!

Strawberry Icing
Icing my "cake" was fun and the faux icing actually looks like real strawberry icing! Yummy!!
Faux Cake
I haven't decided whom to gift this Birthday Wishes wall hanging to...I guess I have to find someone who doesn't mind a riot of colors!!

Edited : My daughter has claimed this as her "advance birthday present" and has happily took it to hang in her room!! I am so relieved someone likes it!

  7. Hi Sonia, Lovely lovely card and the butterflies are like beautiful little jewels. I have been hunting for the Jef extra large butterfly punch that you have, the one that looks like lace. Have you seen it anywhere recently? I have hunted online and phoned devi and Co. They don't have it. I am from Coimbatore and was hoping to locate the punch and have my hubby pick it up for me during his monthly visits to bangalore

    1. The Jef extra large punch though punches lovely delicate butterflies is a terrible punch in my experience...from day one it would repeatedly jam and one day it totally jammed and my husband had to open it up to release it. I dislike using it that is why after my initial posts on this blog you dont see it in any of my projects.

    2. Oh my!!! Good thing I didn't find them then. Thank you so much for telling me that.

    3. I am glad too...its an expensive punch and not just a money waste but a frustrating product to use too! Also a word of advise...try not to invest in the extra large/ jumbo punches...they often give problems. The medium lever punches by Jef in contrast are top class

  25. Missed cking this out the other day so came back for a look. The piping of the icing on edge is so cake like. I would get startyed on something like this and then part way thru mess up so I applaud you for getting all the way thru it and it looks wonderful. Especially like the Butterflies. Fun to do a creation that brings out the child in us. I say "Forever Young!" Have a BEE-utiful day!

  29. A lot of cakes I've seen in grocery stores are loaded with color and embellishments too. Your "happy birthday" looks like it came straight off of a real birthday cake, as does the icing. And you obviously had a blast creating it. Good for you!
