Santa Ornament and Santa Cards

Santa Dome Ornament
Hi friends happy to share some Santa themed projects as my DT project for Maureen's Rudolph Days Challenge where the theme is always "Anything Christmas".
I  just got back from a whirlwind trip to Florida , USA and am still somewhat jet lagged but had fun making this adorable Santa Ornament .
Santa Dome Ornament
The ornament was made using a clear dome, tiny Styrofoam[thermocol] "snowballs" , Marianne Santa and Poppy Stamps Fluffy Snow tree dies !!It was tricky to capture Santa's cuteness through the glass but you can see him better in this Pop Up Card below!
Santa Pop Up Card
I created a wintry snowy scene with Origami Christmas trees[ Tutorial : Easy Paper tree Tutorial ] in front of a woodland cottage[made with Dee's Distinctively Small Winter Cottage die] and an adorable Santa!
Foam Santa Card
This card is my favorite as it features a few of my favorite Christmas items...fluffy snow-laden trees, Christmas presents, glittering colorful lights and of course Santa Claus!

Dont forget to participate in the Rudolph Days Challenge with a Christmas project before the 31st...Maureen always has some fabulous prizes !

Making a Respiratory System Model !

Respiratory System Model
In my daughter's school, the teachers don't stress out the kids by giving marks or grades  for projects and that I guess makes it all the more relaxed and a fun learning experience for the children! My daughter loves to make 3 D models and dioramas for her school projects and really likes to put in a lot of work!
Lungs Model
Though the topic was respiratory system , we decided to just concentrate on the parts beyond the trachea!
Respiratory System Model- Alveoli
Though I know most of my blogger friends will be least interested in a detailed tutorial of how to make a model of the Respiratory system...sharing a few steps all the same as  a lot of folks do google up such topics. Hehe yes... my blog stats tell me  a lot of people come to my blog searching about various such school project topics!!]
Making the Lungs, Trachea and Bronchi
Lung Model
We used big sponges to make the lungs and used regular scissors to snip off the excess sponge and shape it. Our lungs are actually life size though simplistic in shape!
Lung Model
There was some flexible plastic piping at home and this was perfect to make the trachea and bronchi and it was also helpful to explain to my daughter about the cartilaginous tissue forming these tubes!
Trachea and Bronchi Model

We used an adhesive called Fevibond to stick one short piece of the tubing to a longer piece and thence form the point of bifurcation of the trachea into the bronchi.
Respiratory System Model
It was super easy to insert the "bronchus" into each  sponge "lung" by simply twisting the pipe in and securing with fevibond glue.
Lung Model
The part my daughter enjoyed the most was painting the lungs!

Making the Air Sacs [Alveoli]
Making a  Model of Alveoli
Alveoli [ tiny air sacs] are the endpoint of the respiratory system where the gaseous exchange takes place and we used tiny styrofoam [thermocol] balls and light weight air-drying clay to make the bunches of alveoli!
Model of Alveoli
We used plastic straws to make the " bronchioles" which  led to the alveoli, poked the straws into balls of clay and stuck the thermocol balls onto the clay.
Model of Alveoli
Coming back to the lungs...here are the painted lungs.

Making a Lung Model
And here is the model after attaching the tracheo-bronchial tree!
Respiratory System Model
To add charm to the model, my daughter  die-cut glitter foam letters  to form labels for  the parts.
Respiratory System Model
She was so proud that amongst all the models and charts the children had brought, her science teacher chose to keep her model in the showcase of their science lab so that junior and even senior children could see it!

Asteroids and Meteoroids School Project

Asteroids and Meteoroids School Project
Hi friends life is slowly settling down for me and since I have been missing my blogger friends I thought I will restart blogging but not with my creation but my daughter's!
This is a school project my 11yr old made for her Geography school project on Asteroids and Meteoroids.
Asteroids and Meteoroids School Project
We really put a lot of  paper-crafting supplies to good use to make this 3 D chart. The letters were cut from glitter foam using Spellbinders dies and  spray paints and  glitter glue came in quite handy to create the planets and other celestial bodies!
Asteroids and Meteoroids School Project
The base of the 3 D chart is a sheet of thermocol  painted in  a splotchy manner with black spray paint and glittered up with patchily with sparkling silver glitter glue!
Asteroids and Meteoroids School Project
The "Asteroid belt" between Jupiter and Mars has modified "pompoms" made sparkly with generous helpings of silver glitter glue!
Asteroids and Meteoroids School Project
Jupiter is my favorite...love how the splattering of paint and the glitter glue gives it a misty, shimmering look! And in the photo below you can see the closeup details of the Asteroid belt!
Asteroids and Meteoroids School Project
My daughter was so proud of her model and I think for a long long time she will remember about this little topic in geography !

I will be visiting you all soon! I sure did miss my blogger pals!

Thermocol Crafts : Sparkling Snowman

Sparkling Thermocol Snowman
Hi friends ,it feels so good to be back to blogland after a gap of a month. We had gone on a family vacation to Singapore and I am settling down to normal life only now!
While it's still winter I would like to share a cute snowman my daughter created using thermocol/styrofoam balls and "sparkling dust" a new product launched in India by Crafters Corner.
Thermocol Crafts
My kiddo is quite good working with clay and she fashioned a nose and sculpted ear muffs  for her snowman using air-drying clay . The hat and muffler were made using pipe stem cleaners. It was so easy to make the snowman sparkle by giving a nice spray using the spray adhesive and dusting over with the "sparkling dust".
You can read more about this child friendly spray adhesive here : Spray Glue Tutorial

I hope you liked this simple cute sparkling snowman

Pop Up Cake Card

Pop Up Cake Card
Dear friends,I know you have heard this many times...I love Pop Up cards! I enjoy spending hours designing pop up cards but of late I have found its equally enjoyable taking a short cut and making pop up cards using my favorite Pop up die designer Karen Burniston's dies [earlier creations " Spinning Pop Up Ball Card and Pop Up Accordion Die Projects]
Pop Up Cake Card
The pop up cake can be made without using dies and if you google up you will find a couple of tutorials but needless to say I found it much easier to make with Karen's die[ a Sizzix one].
I am still not completely over  the "blue and white " phase courtesy all the crafts we did for my daughter's Frozen theme birthday celebration and hence all the white and blue inked parchment and vellum flowers. Since I dont have any tutorial sharing a few crafty tips!
Parchment Flowers
Tip 1 : You need not always match the colors of your floral embellishments to your background .Here the stripes on my stamped and heat embossed flowers [Heartfelt creations sun kissed fleur stamp -die set] match the striped flowers in the background pattern paper [ DCWV].
Those little pink centers on my flowers are not fancy beads but thermocol balls!
Parchment Flowers
Tip 2: I found flowers stamped and heat embossed on the thinner vellum more pliable [ the blue one you see above is a vellum flower] while the white parchment flowers retained the convex shape I embossed on the petals despite being squashed flat on closing the pop up card!
So if you want your handmade flowers to retain their shape opt for parchment paper instead of vellum .

Thermocol Art

Thermocol Art
Being a doctor I meet professionals from all wakes of life but I must admit I am always fascinated by artists.Recently a very talented patient of mine Srikala Gangi Reddy [ a software professional turned artist] invited me to her Art Exhibition.Since my little girl [who will turn 9 this month] loves to paint and draw I took her along with me to the painting exhibition.
Thermocol Art
The theme of the painting exhibition was the Indian classical dancer and Srikala's work was awesome but I didnt realise how profoundly it had affected my daughter till a week later she drew and painted this "dancer" on a sheet of thermocol [styrofoam]!
Thermocol Art
I let her have a free reign on my stencil collection and inkpads [yeah she is allowed to use my distress inks too!] and she added colorful Ganeshas to "bless" her dancer!
Thermocol Art
I suppose a dancer needs music so the little artist has drawn muscial notes on her thermocol canvas! And she made a background for her dancer by sponging with inkpads.
Thermocol Art
I was amazed at how minutely she had taken in all she saw at the Painting exhibition including adding a signature on her painting! Little minds are so impressionable and I am so glad I found time to visit the painting exhibition!

Foam and Thermocol Card

Foam craft card
Hi friends Thank you so much for the kind words on my Glitter foam Christmas card .My 8 year old little girl loves to play with any new crafty goody we get and she made this Glittery Festive card using the new Sizzix  die gifted to us by the generous Shalini Mittal of Crafters Corner
Thermocol crafts
She used the negatives of the die cuts used to make the earlier Glitter foam card and  painstakingly glued all the tiny thermocol [ styrofoam] balls in the wintry scene to make " snow". Sticking the glitter foam die cuts was easy for her as we used adhesive glitter foam sheets.
I hope you like my little one's festive card!

Glitter Foam Card

Christmas tree Card
Hi friends  ,I love glitter as it makes any project look so festive but I dont like the mess loose glitter inevitably leaves when we craft with it.
Glitter Card
Made this glittery card by die cutting glitter foam sheets [ no mess at all !] and adding glittery thermocol balls!
Foam Crafts
There are so many generous souls in the crafting world and I made this card using a negative die cuts of the Poppy stamps Messo background die [ a win from Poppy stamps] and a beautiful Sizzix die sent to me as a present by the generous Shalini Mittal of Crafters Corner.
Presents from Shalini
I am sure you will agree that one of the thrills of craft blogging is the wonderful generosity of the kindred spirits we meet in our crafting journey! And not just the presents and friendships formed in blogland - I cherish each and everyone of you who take time to always drop in and write a few heartwarming words! Thank you so much my friends!

Thermocol Crafts- Lotus tutorial

Thermocol craft lotus
For quite some time now I have been fascinated by thermocol /styrofoam ball ornaments .
You can dress up thermocol balls with ribbons, fabric scraps, pretty paper ,sequins or beads [lots of ideas!!]
I had a bit of a tough time following some of the pine cone tutorials on the net and finally decided to make my own version…it turned out looking like a lotus!!

Thermocol craft lotus
So sharing how we made our thermocol lotus ball!

Materials Required for the Thermocol Ball craft
Lotus flower tutorial
  • Thermocol balls – we used 2 inch sized ones. If you are not able to get a thermocol ball dont worry you can still make your lotus using a plastic ball but instead of pinning you will have to do a lot of gluing !
  • Ribbon ,fabric or paper -I used 1 inch width pink ribbon.Use sizes and colors you want.
  • Pins
  • Scissors
From the pink ribbon Cut one square[ 1 x 1 inch] and many 1 x 2 inch rectangles [cut rectangles double the width of your ribbon/paper]
Lotus tutorial
Fold the rectangles into triangles by folding up the lower corners to meet the upper edge.
Ribbon flowers
My ribbon is kinda satiny and stiff like paper so I could fold and the creases remained
Ribbon flower tutorial
If you are using fabric or normal ribbon you will have to  hold the fold with your fingers
Ribbon flower tutorial
When you have folded up the other corner you will get a nice triangle.Doesnt matter if you get imperfect overlapping edges!
Ribbon flower tutorial
Pin the square onto the thermocol ball
Ribbon flower tutorial
Take the triangle you had folded and Pin the lower 2 corners of the triangle on to the corners of the square as shown keeping the flaps hidden inside.
Ribbon crafts
Keep pinning triangles to cover adjacent corners of the square keeping the lower edges of the triangles in a line on the thermocol ball
Thermocol Ball crafts
You can even use one pin to hold 2 adjacent triangle corners as you get used to pinning on the thermocol ball!
Thermocol Ball crafts
On completing a layer of triangles atop the square start pinning the next layer lower down .
Thermocol Ball crafts
My next layer also had just 4 triangles. Here is the side view showing how the triangles are overlapped on the thermocol ball
Thermocol crafts
Complete the thermocol ball lotus by pinning more triangles and finishing off with green ribbon leaves!
Do tell me how you like this thermocol - ribbon Lotus!!
I think it would look cool as a home decor and for religious souls I guess it would be lovely as a  Pooja  decoration for goddess Lakshmi!
PS: the stand for the lotus may be familiar to some of you. Here is how I made it : Fancy fold card tutorial
Where to buy Thermocol Balls ?: Try your local fancy store. If you are in Bangalore its available cheaply in many sizes at a Packing Material Supply shop in Ebrahim street[ parallel to Commercial street].Also available at Itsy Bitsy.
