Hi friends, sharing a Christmas themed Shaker Ornament with a leaping deer on Chrismtas themed pattern paper and glittery handmade poinsettias.
Shaker ornaments are such fabulous little pieces of home decor and would look lovely anywhere in your home and I think the would make cute handmade gifts too.Shakers are so much fun but time consuming to make and sometimes a bit tricky...sharing an easy way to make shakers which will save you time and help you churn up a dozen to gift or sell.
Materials
Acetate- I used OHP[Overhead projector transparency sheets]. You can recycle bits of transparent packaging too
Glue - Good quality Glue which is not too runny and doesn't take ages to dry.
Shaker elements- beads, sequins, glitter balls, paper bits anything small and lightweight!
Foam- Use the thickest craft foam you can get your hands on.
Shapes - Base and Frame- I used dies...You can hand-cut also

The Dienamics [MFT] Radial Stitched Circle Stax dies and the Dienamics [MFT] Stitched Circle Scallop Frame dies give perfectly fitting base and frames. Many a times shape dies from the same company dont complement each other so I was pretty thrilled with this one! [ I later bought the dienamics single stitch circle frame and sadly it does not coordinate with the radial stax so what I mean to say is if different sets of nesting dies coordinate...it's luck!]
Dont use the glue gun but use thick good quality glue to stick the foam layers. [ used Aleene's fast grab tacky glue].Hot glue can leave strings and create uneven bumpy areas unless you are super precise and careful!
Tip : Allow time for the shaker well to dry nicely before you add the shaker elements as otherwise you will get sequins , beads and what not sticking to the glue on the sides.
Once you have added your shaker elements, you can stick the acetate circle directly on the top foam frame and then add another foam /paper frame on top.
Tip: If your shaker looks a bit uneven...put the whole shaker under a heavy book or box for some time and allow time for the glue to dry.
Use the left over bits of inner foam to help stick the pearl strings/ tassels etc...Her you can happily use the hot glue gun.

Cut frames from craft foam. If you have thick craft foam you can quickly and easily build up the shaker using just 2 or 3 layers.

I love the poinsettias framing the deer and i especially LOVE the green Pom Pom trim - my favourite shade of green. :) excellent tutorial too with a fun santa! You've confirmed that my trouble with shakers is that i don't build enough of a wall or wait long enough for it to dry so little bits stick instead of shake. Lol
ReplyDeleteHehe Linda the very thin sequins do like to adhere to the acetate but I think that's due to static electricity effect and it is okay!!
DeleteGoing over the acetate with an anti-static bag does help in keeping small items from sticking to it.
DeleteHave made my own anti-static bag by using a small baby bootie / sock and put in some cornstarch (can also use talcum powder, baking soda, or baby powder) and sewed shut. Works like a charm especially when embossing on cards.

Foam tape is more time consuming and difficult to build height so I found this method much easier and neater looking

Whenever I have made a shaker card, my bits of confetti etc do stick to the sticky sides of the foam tape. I think I need to invest in some Aileen's tacky glue to use the glue method you have described here.

Aleene's glue is perfect for this Maureen though generally I dont like using it as I have to squeeze the bottle real hard!!

Jane me too...I used to spend a lot of time with little bits of foam too especially when making a circle shaker...and it was challenging to fill the gaps perfectly!

So good to hear from you Surekha. I tried with sticky sides craft foam but it is a bit crazy for the frames as they stuck so fast on contact that it was difficult to get the perfect layering easily and it was more of a struggle so I recommend foam without an adhesive backing as its quicker!
