       Hi friends one of my crafty resolutions for 2020 is to get back to sharing crafts with my friends in blog-land and other social media. My daughter and I made so many things in 2019 but photographing and sharing the  projects online took a huge backseat. I had raised the bar on myself and felt either the  projects were too simple or the  photos were subpar or life simply got in the  way and I ended up sharing very few of my projects last year! Trying not to let self doubt and procrastination get in the  way this year!

Unicorns are so popular with both children and adults and we celebrated my daughter's 13th birthday with a super fun Unicorn theme party.

My daughter's birthday falls on May 30th and she has summer vacations in April and May ...so every year we spend a good chunk of the  vacation planning her birthday.
We had the  party in our living room so we  put up the  main decorations in our living room.We had a pink and white balloon arch at the  doorway to our living room.

We put up pink and white balloons and large flowers all over the  room but concentrated majority of the  unicorn decorations on this wall. You can see a huge handmade Unicorn banner,cute  clouds and rainbows ,a rainbow unicorn, floating hot air balloons and nearly a dozen decoupaged unicorns!

The hot air balloons were die cut using the Spellbinders  Hot Air Balloon Contour Steel Rule Die and yes it did take hours to make the  balloons 3d! .My daughter helped to layer the  balloons atop Crealies  oval die cuts and we topped off the  hot air balloon danglers with die cut clouds [ made using Itsy Bitsy clouddie]

The balloons dangle from blue satin ribbons and I added  clouds [ made using Memory Box dies]  on alternate ribbons.They looked fabulous swinging in the  wind!

We put the  letters of  our "Happy Birthday Prisha" banner on Unicorn faces.The ears and face were made using Crealies  oval foam die cuts ...we could have added unicorn horns but my daughter wanted them to be plain horses!!The tiny floral stamps are also from Crealies  and the  flowers were also die cut with Crealies  dies.

 My kiddo made the  Cloud hanging decoration freehand...aren't those cloud eyes simply adorable !!

The rainbows were pretty easy to make...we used  foam with rainbow colours and cut out big semicircular arches to make the  rainbows and added Memory Box die cut clouds on the  ends.

 My little girl[ well officially a teenager but a little girl to me!!] made the  super cute cloud pinata all by herself...in fact she took hours to make it but it does look super adorable doesn't it!

She also drew and colored this gorgeous huge Unicorn..the  locks of hair are outlined with glitter glue and looks really special !
And here is the  birthday girl! The gorgeous hair bow is handmade...I made the  beautiful rose and foliage using foam !

We had around 20 teenage girls for our party and planned some simple crafts for the  girls to make . We set up 4 big tables and here is how our table looked.

And this is what the  girls made...Unicorn post it note holders. I cut up pieces of chipboard before hand so that the  base would be strong and pre-scored card stock stands for the  holder.Gave the  girls an assortment of pretty pattern papers to choose and lots of embellishments like rhinestones, pom poms , flowers, sequins and glitter to personalize their Post it note holders.

The girls also played quite a few games but I didn't have to stress too much about the  games as my daughter herself organised all the  games !!

It was heartening to see the  girls enjoy themselves and after the  party so many of the  girls' mothers messaged me how much the  girls' enjoyed themselves!

I made quite a few Unicorn themed decoupaged decorations and since decoupage is such a time consuming craft ...I started making all the  decorations weeks before the  party!

And recycled a bottle into a Unicorn...this time with a frilly ruffled ribbon top and  pearls!!

Made the  Unicorn themed boxes to hold our craft activity supplies by upcycling cardboard boxes

Made 3 Pen stands by recycling old Nutella jars into Unicorns!

I don't have a good photograph of our cake  but here is our 2 tier homemade Unicorn cake...It is a chocolate cake with butter icing done using Russian nozzles. My daughter made all the  cute  unicorns by hand sculpting fondant!

And though no unicorns in this one...I have to share it as it is always so popular at parties...a Jelly Flower cake...completely handmade with Jelly! [I am especially proud of  how it turned out as I managed to make it in between the  mad rush of getting the  house cleaned , putting up the  party decorations , baking and icing the cake and cooking for the  party!!]

Simple DIY Minion Party

         Hi friends,  this May my daughter celebrated her 10th birthday and though she had told me months back that she wanted a minion themed party, as her birthday drew near I was in no way prepared as I had house guests and was juggling too many things to be in a position to plan an elaborate theme party! So I told her we would have a simple birthday party like most other kids in our layout and not a themed one!

       My daughter reluctantly agreed and I sighed a breath of relief but it was short lived, as soon we had "we are not doing anything for my birthday this year!" from a saaad doe eyed little girl and which mother would not give in!

         I had just 2 evenings amidst cooking , shopping, cleaning and taking care of my guests to whizz up some Minion Theme Magic for my kiddo and here is what we managed!!

Homemade Minion

        My kiddo wanted a 3 D minion she could carry....ooooh boy kids can be soooo specific and demanding!  She had envisioned a complicated "hours of fun working with mom" kinda project like we did to make the  Mummy for her Egyptian theme party.

          Fortunately  the "Gods of creativity" and "Guardians of stressed out mothers" took pity on me and blessed me with a brainwave! I spied the  cushions/bolsters on our sofa and the yellow curtains in our hall and hey presto ....within minutes a Minion was born!

           Yeah these 3 D Minions were sooo easy to make....just wrap the curtain around the cushion/ pillow, tuck all the loose curtain ends in and pin in place with lots of  safety pins .Cut a strip of chart paper to make the eye band and add some glitter foam eyes!

         Our minions have the letter "P" instead of the official Minion G after my daughter's initial!

        We also made lots of huge capsule style minions by pasting colored chart paper on recycled cardboard cartons. Dont you just love the cute mouth my daughter drew on the little minion below!

           Our homemade Minion cake was a scrumptious chocolate cake with yellow and blue whipped cream- butter icing!! This was so easy as I had my mom to help me though I did have to make a mad dash to the local supermarket in the last minute to get the right biscuits for the eyes!! The cute red mouth is a candy!!

We made around 50 of these Minions and  they were sooo easy and fun to make using foam .

        My niece and daughter did most of the die cutting [ we used oval dies]...I just had to help hot glue the eyes and the Minions to strips of foam bands on the pen caps.

The birthday girl hand drew all the cute smiles on the Minions and oooh was she proud of herself!

         And that is the birthday girl with her Minions......and yeah  though we tried we couldn't get a  decent yellow birthday frock.....but as long as the birthday girl didn't mind all was good!

       Though this year's  birthday pales in comparison to all the elaborate props and decor we made for last year's  Frozen theme party  I am happy I could manage to keep the birthday girl happy!!

Pancake shapes -Ocean theme Edible craft

Ha Ha I feel almost naughty posting this! As I said in my earlier post the ocean theme challenge at BGC is something that really "inspired me"...well inspired me so much that we had fish [well actually fish shaped  pancakes!]for breakfast !!

These are Pancakes made from milk and flour and shaped freehand while pouring batter on the pan---made an octopus and an angel fish

Dear friends I was missing from blog-land the past week as my little one celebrated her 6th birthday on Wednesday.Ever since we saw the movie Tangled my daughter has been in love with Rapunzel and so I bravely undertook my first  themed birthday party .

While my mom and I were brainstorming how to make the Rapunzel themed cake my daughter wanted to make a paper Rapunzel's' tower . 

I stuck a plastic container atop an empty box of shuttlecocks and added a conical paper roof for her tower.To keep her busy and out of our hair I asked her to decorate it  anyway she liked...It turned out so cute that mom and I decided it was indeed the best Rapunzel's Tower and based our cake scenery around it !!

The cake is a circular chocolate cake and I drew a road on it with a knife.My little one decided how the scene would look [made our job easier!]

 Placed Rapunzel's tower at the top of the road and Rapunzel walked along it with her prince to keep her company!

We used a knife to cut wafers to make the fence along the road. I kept the cake icing fairly simple with just vines and flowers.

 The toy castle was her birthday present and she was a bit reluctant to add it to the scenery as she wanted to keep on playing with it!

The Paper Rapunzel is a 3 D papercraft made using templates from Disney --it was quite easy to make and looked so charming!

We placed a Rapunzel cut out from her toy's plastic packaging onto a toy castle and used it as part of the party decor!

This little Paper craft Rapunzel scene from Tangled Movie was again made by the birthday girl using some free printable from Hellokids.com

I am not a party gal and planning a simple party itself gives me ulcers so this theme party did give me its share of nightmares and panic moments!! but  far from being a disaster the party was a roaring success for my little one [so worth all the worrying and panic !]

We made lots of other Rapunzel themed party decorations --shall share them with tutorials in the coming days.

Its my mom's birthday today and last night I baked her favorite cake which is carrot cake.At home none of us like to eat cake icing yet I  didnt want my mom's cake to look plain!

I won a Pie Lane challenge recently and dear Tejal whom I consider a "crafters encylcopedia "sent me some stencils and she also shared a stencil embossing tutorial with a cuttlebug.I dont own a diecut/embossing machine but decided to emboss with my stencils anyway-- in a crazy way!! I decided to try some edible stencil embossing minus the cuttle bug or the heat gun! !

How to Stencil Decorate your Cake

I am no expert at cake decoration and this was the first time I tried a stencil on the cake so in these pictures taking you along on my cake decoration adventure .

For Stencil cake decoration you need:

Icing sugar- sieve it first to remove the lumps

Stencil - metal or plastic or homemade!

A knife or spoon to spread the icing sugar on your stencil.

This picture below shows a mistake I made -- sharing that too so that you can avoid it when you try it! I sprinkled icing sugar by hand onto the stencil without giving thought to how much was falling on the cake.I thought I would be able to brush off the "extra" sugar later! The icing sugar stuck on the cake so firmly I couldnt remove it!

By the the 2nd attempt I was more smart and so only sprinkled a tiny bit of sugar using a knife.

By the last stencil design I was more of an expert and decided that gently patting the thin layer of sugar gave it a nice uniform surface on the stencil design!

Use both hands to lift off the stencil from the cake and your lovely stencil design is embossed on the cake! Using this stencil idea it was so easy to "ice" this cake- took just 10mins!

Do forgive the dim lit photos---this was done at midnight! And do try this type of edible craft even though my maiden attempt is a bit clumsy! I am sure you can do a better and more imaginative job at stencil cake decorating!
