Side Step Card with Pop Up card Tutorial

Sea life Side Step Card
This is a side step card with a pop up diorama scene on the inside.
Pop Up card Panorama
As part of the reward for being in the top 3 at the Delightful Challenge I got to chose 2 adorable digital stamps from Digital Delights. I am also being honored with the Spotlight Guest DT post at Digital Delights by LoubyLou . I had to make a creation with the digital stamps I had won. This was the first time I worked with stamps so it was a bit scary!
I thought I would make a type of card I was familiar with - a 3 D card! My little one [she is 5yrs old] enjoyed working with me on this one.She helped in coloring, embellishing and even deciding which picture to put in and where!
There are 2 little mermaids in this card.We gave the  mermaid on the outside a 3 D effect by embossing her.I painted the little mermaid with a special paint called puffy paint. Here is how I embossed the mermaid ! Apply the puffy paint and let it dry.
Puffy Paint Embossing
After  the paint has dried heat it with a hair dryer. I have used the conventional stove flame instead [Just keep your image at some distance and keep moving it]! I had to do this step when little helper was in school!
Puffy Paint embossing
Here is the heat embossed Mermaid. It looks like glitter glue but is not at all sticky[ Using glitter glue on cards makes them so sticky!] and the texture is beautiful .
Puffy Paint embossing
My little one helped to add sequins to the little mermaid and color her with glitter gel pens
Embellishing Digital Stamp
Here is our Mermaid framed on corrugated paper and bordered with real shells
Embossed Digital Mermaid
The quilled water scenery has some eccentric coils, combing and spiral coils.
Quilled Sea life scenery
Many of my blogger friends had asked how I had quilled the yellow dress on my sun flower girl. Here is how I did it.Make a coil with the paper strip, gather the coils on to one side- pin it on the edge and apply glue on the surface.Let it dry.
Quilled Octopus Tutorial
Flatten it out as shown and bend on itself. Apply glue at the ends and you have a nice quilled shape.I didn't apply glue right at the ends here as I wanted to get a rounder shape for the octopus.
Quilled Octopus Tutorial
How to make an easy side step card
Most of my talented readers will be knowing how to make a side step card. The side step card has a pop up built into it and I added a couple more floors to the ocean! Here is how I made this underwater Pop up diorama.
The first image is an A 4 card folded in half. Make a cut through both the halves to 1/2 width.Fold and bend inwards as shown and you have an easy side step card with hardly any measuring involved[ I hate measuring!!]
Side Step Card tutorial
How to add the pop up bases.
Avoid  thin paper to make the pop up card bases as you need it to be strong to support your images.
You can make the pop up card bases with measuring or follow this easy method. Here I have taken a rectangular piece of card and scored 3 lines. The outer 2 blue lines are for the tabs and the middle one can come at the center or off center as you wish.Fold mountain folds at the score lines as shown.
Pop Up card diorama Tutorial
Align the rectangular piece of card [with the tabs folded behind]with middle score line falling on the center fold of your A 4 card lying flat .Roughly mark the top border as shown.Flip the piece over and this is how you will stick the tabs!
Pop Up card diorama Tutorial
I have made use of the 3 naturally occurring valleys of the side step card to create pop up steps made as explained above.
Pop Up card diorama Tutorial
The inside of the card is a pop up under water diorama scene. The images here are a major recycling work as they are discarded pieces from an ocean diorama set I had got from Navneet publishers for my daughters school project.

Here are the various creatures in the ocean bed

Pop up Card Ocean Diorama
We made the little mermaid in the pop up scene a 3 D decoupage.
Pop up card sea life
Here is my little one coloring the mermaid. She absolutely loved this image and wanted to know why we were using only 2 mermaids !We layered the images using foam tape.

3D Decoupage Tutorial

3 D Decoupaged Mermaid
I added a special interactive mechanism  below the mermaid which makes the Ray fish swing across the " Have a Magical Day".

Kinetic card Mechanism

Kinetic Card Mechanism
By the same mechanism there are sea weeds attached which swing back and forth in front of the mermaid.

Pop up card sea life
I enjoyed making this Pop up underwater scene. Though it looks elaborate , its quite easy ,fun and quick to make.

Pop up Card Ocean Diorama
Like a real Panorama you need to view the card from different angles to see different pictures. Please tell me how you liked this.My first Spotlight DT creation + first work using a digital stamp!
