Decoupaged Desk Organiser with Foamiran Roses

Decoupaged Desk Organiser
Hi friends...happy to share a special project I made for my craft-room ...a decoupaged desk organiser. This is a mammoth desk organiser and has place to hold a lot of my crafty supplies but truth be told I just feel like looking at it and not using it at all...it turned out too pretty to use!!!
Decoupaged Desk Organiser
This is the MDF organiser I got from TCES... I love the quality of Rakhi's products and this is the 2nd one I got from her...you can see my first project here : Ocean Themed Shadowbox Desk Organizer.
MDF Desk Organiser from TCES
This organiser is pretty huge measuring 16 x 11 x 10 inches and  made of thick sheets of MDF so it is pretty sturdy. It was quite easy to decoupage too as it comes already smooth and well sanded  thus saving a lot of time  when decoupaging and it is easy to get a  beautiful finish.
Desk Organiser
I chose to use Graphic 45 once again....somehow Graphic 45 papers are my go to papers for large projects and those really special ones and the themes are so fabulous and it is also easy to coordinate the papers!
Desk Organiser
After a coat of gesso , decoupaged  the organiser using Graphic 45 papers from 2 stacks : Portrait of a Lady and  Portrait of a Lady Patterns and Solids.
Desk Organiser

Used rice papers from Stamperia to add the lovely roses and petal on the draws. Though rice paper is expensive it  is so much easier than decoupaging with napkins.
Desk Organiser
I used Folk Art paints and Distress Inks  to change  the  white around the roses to a cream shade with a peach/pink tinge.
Decoupaged Desk Organiser
The above picture is how it looks without the roses and is actually pretty sober and functional but I just couldnt resist making matching foamiran roses and rosebuds with my new Graphic 45 flower dies.
Handmade Foamiran Roses
I used the large die to make the big roses and the medium one to make the rose buds...the shape was just perfect that I didnt have to even heat the foamiran !
Foamiran Flowers with Graphic 45
To get the exact shade of peach to match the papers I used 2 colours of artists oil pastels to colour cream foamiran.
Handmade Foamiran Roses
The foliage around the flowers was also made using Graphic 45 papers...I just inked it a bit using Shabby Shutters Distress Ink for a perfect match.
Handmade Foamiran Roses
The little white filler flowers were also made with foam but this time I did heat the flowers for a second or two to help shape them.
Handmade Foamiran Roses
The roses were given a sprinkle of "sparkling dust" for a subtle shimmer!
Handmade Foamiran Roses
The little bird cage is a chipboard piece mounted on a clay base and dressed up with lace and a rosebud.
Handmade Foamiran Roses
The images from the Graphic 45 "Portrait of a Lady" are so lovely I could stare at them all day!
Handmade Foamiran Roses
On the "shelf" two of the floral arrangements have roses and foliage attached to a shell so that I can move them away when I want.
Decoupaged Desk Organiser
I am so glad I could use the beautiful rose pattern paper on the sides...I had been hoarding it for a special project.

And here are all the foamiran flowers I used to decorate this desk organiser.

Pop Up Card Tutorial and Die Cutting Tips

Pop Up Christmas Card
Hi friends...hope you are all looking forward to celebrating the festive season and looking forward to the New Year. I have been super busy with renovations taking place at my home but  excited to share a simple Pop Up Card tutorial with you .
As a crafter it is a huge morale boost to be invited to be a guest designer ! And it is especially so when the honor comes all the way from the Netherlands !! This post is my Guest designer post for Crealies , a Netherlands based company [ with world wide clientele] which has some fabulous, unique and cleverly designed dies !
Pop Up Christmas Card

This Pop Up Card design goes by many names such a U card/bridge card etc. It has a central panel, side panels and a connecting bridge. It stands up beautifully like a box and the beauty of this design is that it can fold perfectly flat for mailing. I have adapted the basic design idea using gorgeous Crealies dies.
Pop Up Christmas Card
The border designs were made using Crealies On the Edge dies and the gorgeous starry design you can see in both the cards was created using Crealies Inside only Stars die.The shimmery snowflakes were made using glitter foam and the beautiful Crealies Duo Dies No 47,Flower 19.
Pop Up Christmas Card
These Pop Up Cards can be made as elaborate as you want or with minimal embellishments and still pack a punch!!
Pop Up Card Tutorial
Supplies
This is a very basic style of card and you actually don't need anything special apart from card stock and glue
But if you have border punches or dies it is a fabulous card design to put them to good use.
  • Card Stock in contrasting colors works really well for this design
  • Border dies/ punches - I used Crealies On the Edge Dies
The main card base is formed using 3 pieces :
Central Panel : 4 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches.
Two side Panels : 3 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches.
The Connecting Panel measures: 5 1/2 x 2 inches.
Pop Up Card Tutorial
You can actually use one large piece f card stock for the central and side panels but if you are using a die / punch using separate pieces is easier.
Die cut beautiful borders on all 4 card pieces
Tip to get Perfect result when using Border Dies
If you are a perfectionist and like to get perfectly centered , symmetrical and horizontal die cut panels here are a few tips to keep in mind while using border dies:
Step 1:Find the center of  the edge of your card - you can mark using a centering ruler or more easily use a scoreboard if you have one.The 6 inch mark on your scoreboard is the easiest place to work with.
Step 2: Line the Center of your "on the edge" die on the central mark on the card. Again if you have a scoreboard the die will fit snugly into the 6 inch score groove.
Step 3: Use a ruler horizontally on the card and align the die so that it's lower/outer edges abut on the ruler-Any long rule will do the trick but a grid ruler is wonderful as you can use the grids to perfectly align your ruler to the horizontal. The best is a T square ruler like I have used here with it's T arm abutting onto the right edge of your scoreboard
Step 4: Tape the die on to the card using tape only on the die and the outer card edge which you will discard after die cutting.
This way you will get perfect symmetrically aligned die cut borders which you can layer, create pockets and what not!
Pop Up Card Tutorial
Snip off bits of card to showcase the border design [ I trimmed the central panel to around 4 inches width]
Score the side panel cards in the center and 1/2 inch from one edge and fold as shown [see red arrows in the picture]
Pop Up Card Tutorial
Glue the folded edges of the side panel behind the central panel adjusting where you want to glue depending on the border design you want.Your basic Pop Up Card base is done.
Pop Up Card Tutorial
How to make optional decorative panels
The side panels have an outer and inner part and you can decorate each with designer papers / other options. I used the beautiful "only inside" Crealies die designs to get the starry design.
Pop Up Card Tutorial
You can play with measurements to suit your card design or use:
One 3 x 6 inch red card stock- die cut the border and cut it in half to decorate the outer part of the side panels
One 2 x 6 inch red card stock- die cut the border and cut it in half to decorate the inner part of the side panels
Pop Up Card Tutorial
I used "only inside" Crealies dies to die cut designs on these decorative strips

Pop Up Card Tutorial
Here is a tip to get perfect "inside only" die cutting " : As you can see from the photo in the shorter part of the die cut the star "only inside" die is longer than the card stock...if you want the design to cut only inside position your top cutting plate only on the part you want the die to cut and run in through your machine !
Pop Up Card Tutorial
Optionally you can add a central backing panel  in red  measuring 4 x 7 inches. And here are all the elements die cut and ready to assemble into your Pop Up Card .
Pop Up Card Tutorial
If you chose not to attach the connecting panel this is how the card will look like....a beautiful arched gate fold style card which stands nicely.
Pop Up Card Tutorial
If you want to go ahead and make it into a  Pop Up Card ....use the connecting panel which  you can layer with contrasting papers
Pop Up Card Tutorial
Fold one "side panel" on its fold and extend the other side panel . Position your connecting panel on the lower part of your cad to see where it overlaps on these side panels.
Pop Up Card Tutorial
Apply glue on the edges of your connecting panel and glue it onto your folded card in a symmetrical manner...you can use the die cut border design on your card as an easy guide.
Pop Up Card Tutorial
Apply firm pressure and when  you fold the card up here is how it will look like:

Teacher's Day Gifts with Crealies

Bird House Tea Light Holders
Hi friends, Teacher's Day is celebrated on September 5th in India and my daughter and I love to use this chance to give small tokens of appreciation to her teachers . Over the years we have  made Photo-frames, Pen Stands, Post it Note Holders, Paper Purses and Mini Albums[Here are the projects: Teacher's Day Gifts]
Paper-craft Bird Houses
This year I was struggling for ideas and thought only a card will have to do when a wonderful parcel containing fantastic dies from Crealies arrived all the way from Netherlands !
Crealies Dies from Netherlands
My regular readers will know I love working with dies and when Annelies from Crealies  contacted me some weeks earlier asking me if I would like to work with her dies I literally jumped at the chance as I loved her die designs!!
The gorgeous Create a Box Bird house set gave me the idea to make Tea Light Holders!
Teacher's Day Gifts- Paper House Tea Light Holders
I had to make 9 Tea Light Holders as my daughter has 9 teachers this year and as all are ladies I went with a feminine Shabby Chic theme!
Paper House Tea light Holder
I wanted the frame work to be sturdy and so used the base die to cut thick kraft card stock.
Crealies Create a Box -Birdhouse Die Set
I loved that the die set was cleverly designed and contained extra dies to cut all the decorative panels !
Paper House
I used pretty papers from Papericious which I distressed with Abandoned Coral Distress Inks to line the panels of the Bird house.
Crealies Decorette XL-Quatrefoil Die
So in love with Quatrefoil die...such an intricate design and it cut so beautifully! I loved it so much that I used it to decorate the walls and cut small strips to form decorative borders!
Paper House
The original design is meant to open at the base of the house but I modified it to have a side door and attached a brass "door knob"
Adding Door Knobs
Also attached magnets on the door and back of the house so that the door would be securely closed.
Adding Magnetic Closure
The ruffled pink polka dotted ribbon and lattice roof [made using a Wild Rose Studio Floral Frame die] helped complete the "Shabby Chic" look!

Here is how the tea light fits inside the "Bird House"!!
Tea Light Holder
The birds in the die set are mirror images which is  super cool as you can easily make birds facing either direction !
Crealies Double Fun- Birds Die Set
Paper Craft Bird House
Love how the bird dies embossed even without using an extra embossing pad!
Bird House Teacher's Day Gift

Teacher's Day Gift
Feathers are quite the fashion in the crafting world but I have never had a die to make such delicate beautiful feathers so this  Crealies die was especially delightful!
Crealies Double Fun-Feathers Die Set
I used the die to cut feathers from matching pattern paper.
Paper Feathers
And tweaked the die cut to keep the central feather element!
Paper Feathers
This Tea Light holder all lighted up looked so pretty in our garden!

It was so much fun designing the 9 bird houses differently while still keeping to a theme!
