Easy Foamiran Flower Tutorial

Easel Drawer Box with Foamiran Flowers
Hi friends sharing a project combining my love for handmade flowers, diecutting and 3 D projects- and Easel Card with Drawer Box.
Easel Drawer Box
I have used gorgeous Lemoncraft papers[from dear friend Lisa ]and dozens of dies ;the exact names of which I have listed at the end of the post.
Foamiran Flowers
The butterfly in the photo above and the tiny bow in the photo below are clay embellishments made with air drying clay and  molds and jazzed up with microfine glitter[ from brand dress my craft, crafters corner]
DIY Clay Embellishments
Since the theme at Cuttlebug mania includes bows I incorporated a variety of bows in this project. The top 2 corners of the easel card have paper bows from a Cottage Cutz die set, then there is a clay bow [ in photo above] and in the picture below is a dainty delicate bow die cut from foamiran.
Foamiran Bow
The shiny butterfly badge from Lemoncraft and is again a gift from dear Lisa! I used white crackle paste and Scrapberry petal  stencil to add texturing on parts of the card[ you can see it peeking behind the bottle!]

Foamiran Flower Tutorial
I have already introduced you to foamiran in an earlier post [ Foamiran Rose Tutorial ]..sharing an easy Tutorial to make simple foamiran flowers
More Tips while working with Foamiran

  • Foamiran sheets can differ in thickness : Foamiran sheets do differ in thickness even when you buy from genuine distributors so don't be dismayed if you find some sheets thicker than others. In this project the white foamiran sheets were slightly thicker than the pink ones and if you look closely you can see a very subtle difference in the flowers.
  • If you are diecutting foamiran sheets die cut 3- 5 flowers in one go depending on the thickness of your sheets. This helps to flatten your foamiran sheets even more!
  • Heating your flowers is completely optional but fun and can give a different look- In this project the buds were created using  same Cheery Lynn  sunflower die but after heating with the iron-box to curl the petals.
  • Jazz up the flowers using glitters. Here I used sparkling dust by dress my craft.
  • Adhesive- the easiest is hot glue and you can get a nice permanent bond but do remember to tackle those pesky glue strings while you make the flower and as soon as you glue otherwise your project will look like a nest with all those strings!!!

Foamiran Flowers
I made the drawer box using chipboard and recycling a desktop calendar!! It was a bit time consuming but very gratifying to make something from scratch!
I dont have a full Tutorial but here are some pictures with tips.
Drawer Box
I first decided the dimensions of my drawer box and then cut out an arc using a steel plate as a guide.
Tip : Use sandpaper to smoothen the edges of cut chipboard and rectify any ragged edges.

Drawer Box Construction
Use carpenter's adhesive tape to help hold the pieces of your 3 D project in place while the wet glue dries!

Line the inside of the drawer box with pattern paper before you stick the top!
Foamiran Flowers
I first thought I would keep the drawer box flat and so I added a thin layer of foam as the base but added crystal feet [like in this Easel Card Drawer Box ]

The metal handle was toned down with gesso to match the rest of the project and has a tiny fabric ribbon bow!
And here is the Easel Card Drawer Box in my garden!

I hope you liked the simple Tutorial and the overall project.

Zig Brush Pens Water Coloring Tips

Mini Album
Hi friends, recently my family and I vacationed in Phuket , Thailand and we spent so much time in the oceans that for my DT post for Crafters Corner, I made a Mini Album in an Ocean theme with a cute water-colored mermaid, shells and various ocean motifs !
Handmade Flowers
I love making flowers and this project has quite a few handmade flowers. The big blue sparkling rose was made using Spellbinders Rose Creations  die using this Tutorial : Easy Rose Tutorial . The Magenta Fluffy flower was made from craft foam and the Cheery Lynn  Sun flower die using this Tutorial : Easy Daisy Tutorial and the Pink rose was made using craft foam and the Spellbinders Bauble Blossoms 1 die.

Handmade Flowers
I also added some handmade clay flowers [ the plumeria and the little white buds you see scattered around] made freehand using Thai Clay [ an air drying clay] and Oil paints. I love picking up shells from the beach and the shells on this mini album cover are shells I had picked up from our family holidays in Goa, Thailand and Malaysia over the years !
The Heat embossed " Treasures of the Ocean" is a stamp from Crafty Individuals [Cl 272] and such an apt one for this project!
Mixed Media background
I made a mixed media style background using Ranger texture paste and a Carabelle Studio Geometry Stencil. Sprayed some Lindy's sprays and added tiny little pearls, turquoise blue glitter balls and golden star sequins! The anchor was cut using a Joy Crafts die.
Water-coloring and Diamond Dust
The little mermaid who is the star of the project has a magical sparkling background with diamond dust, golden stars, a pearl star and dew drops!
The Whismy Stamps Mermaid was watercolored with Kuretake Zig Clean Color Real Brush Pens
In case you missed it here is my introductory post on Kuretake Zig Clean Color Real Brush Pens with lots of tips
And sharing more tips here.
1.If you are not heat embossing your image, stamp it with an ink such as Versa fine which will not react and bleed with water!
2.Allow enough time for the stamped image to dry before you water color or if you are in a hurry heat set it with a heat gun!

Use images which are perfectly dry

3.Download a color swatch chart like this one from Kuretake website or better still make a color swatch so that you wont have to keep trying pens to choose colors! This is especially useful when you are coloring an animal or human image!

  • When making a color swatch make one grouping the colors together rather than in a chronological order!
Kuretake Zig Clean Color Real Brush Pens  Color Swatch
4.While coloring an image such as an animal or human using different shades of the same color, apply dark colors first and blend out with the water brush. If you put dark colors later it is more difficult to blend without using more water!
Watercoloring with Zig  Brush Pens
For the tail of this mermaid I used turquoise green[ No 42] first and  pulled it inside with the water-brush.Later applied light blue [No 36] and blended it in nicely using the waterbrush again.

5.Creating gradient effect!

Why I love the Zig brush pens compared to normal watercolors is that they are quite easy to use to create gradients and blends even for a beginner!
To easily create a gradient blending of colors the trick is to know where to lay on the first brushstrokes  first!
Brush on the ink on the edges and shadow areas
    Water-coloring with Zig  Brush Pens
Pull in the colors using the water brush!
    Water-coloring with Zig  Brush Pens
This is one of the easiest ways to get a fading away of a color! Here I have used just a singe color- May Green [No 47] and got a beautiful gradient effect by pulling in the colors using a water brush!
    Water-coloring with Zig  Brush Pens
6.Always apply the brush pen directly to only small areas at a time as if it dries it wont blend well. If you find this method difficult then mix the ink and water on an acrylic block or other surface and then apply it to your paper
7.Coloring Skin Tones - I think you will all agree coloring skin is always challenging to a beginner. The Zig brush pens are available in a beautiful range of shades of browns and grays and pinks .
Water-coloring with Zig  Brush Pens
The Flesh Color [No 71] is one of the most useful colors in the Zigs set and using it alone you can get a beautiful skin tone. In this step by step however I first applied Blush [No 69]on the edges and shadow areas and pulled it in with a water-brush
Water-coloring with Zig  Brush Pens
Later went over the larger area with the Flesh Brush pen [ No 71]
Water-coloring with Zig  Brush Pens
  • Adding Cheek blush!
Water-coloring with Zig  Brush Pens
You can add life to your animal and human images by adding a bit of color to the cheeks using Tea Rose [No 220] or any shade of pink..... Just add a tiny bit of pinkish color and blend with the water brush!
8.While water-coloring tiny areas such as the flowers in this mermaid image use the brush pens directly and use very little or no water as it can bleed easily!
Water-coloring small areas!
9.Coloring Hair!
Water-coloring Hair
Coloring hair is always tricky no matter what coloring medium you use...the only thing I can say is before I got my Zigs the  hair of my colored images was a big blob...now its much much better!!
10.Last Tip is that if you don't get good results  with your attempts try changing the type of water brush you are using and/ or the type of watercolor paper you are using! There is no right or wrong product...just that one type of brush or paper might work better for you!
Zigs on different water color papers
When I worked on floral or freehand water coloring I didnt notice much difference in water coloring on different water color papers but for this intricate mermaid stamp I found that I had poorer control on the Brustro paper. On Brustro the pigment had a tendency to spread more on adding water , bled outside the lines quite a bit and had a splotchier look on layering the colors.
Water-colored Images on Canson and Brustro respectively
The colors were however more vibrant and rich on the Brustro Paper and lovely for freehand water-coloring.
So the main point is to experiment with different brands of watercolor paper if you are not happy with your attempts!
Ocean Themed Mini Album
I am not an expert at water-coloring but my coloring skills have improved tremendously after I got the Zig brush pens and I do hope some of these tips will be helpful if you have or are planning to buy these amazing watercolor pens!

Thermocol Crafts : Sparkling Snowman

Sparkling Thermocol Snowman
Hi friends ,it feels so good to be back to blogland after a gap of a month. We had gone on a family vacation to Singapore and I am settling down to normal life only now!
While it's still winter I would like to share a cute snowman my daughter created using thermocol/styrofoam balls and "sparkling dust" a new product launched in India by Crafters Corner.
Thermocol Crafts
My kiddo is quite good working with clay and she fashioned a nose and sculpted ear muffs  for her snowman using air-drying clay . The hat and muffler were made using pipe stem cleaners. It was so easy to make the snowman sparkle by giving a nice spray using the spray adhesive and dusting over with the "sparkling dust".
You can read more about this child friendly spray adhesive here : Spray Glue Tutorial

I hope you liked this simple cute sparkling snowman
I have missed my blogger pals and will be visiting everyone soon!!

Celebrating Onam and Onam Crafts

Onam Crafts
Hi friends, today is a very important festival for us Malayalees[aka Keralites who are from the South Indian State of Kerala]! It's our Onam!

I love reading about festivals and traditions of different cultures and thought maybe you my crafty friends  would find it interesting too  so sharing a few titbits about Onam but from a personal point!
Here are 2 earlier blog-posts about Kerala and Onam
Kerala Diorama School Project
Onam Festival School Project
Onam falls in August-September and in my home state of Kerala, festivities last a good ten days! The special thing about it unlike other festivals is that all Keralites celebrate it regardless of their religious beliefs and it is a festival that encourages family and community bonding in a big way!
Buying new clothes  and putting Pookalams[ floral carpets] in front of the house are part of the fun of Onam! If you visit Kerala during Onam you will see beautiful Pookalams in every nook and corner!
I have such fond memories of going flower picking with my cousins ,aunts and uncles in my childhood and helping to make Pookalams in front of the house!
When I started a family of my own , though I married a non Keralite, I kept the tradition alive.
Onam Celebration!
When my daughter was young our Pookalam didnt last very long as she had more fun sitting on the floral carpets and strewing flower petals all over!!
Onam Pookalam
When she grew older, she enthusiastically helped to create the Pookalam than take it apart!! Amen!!
Onam is special for one more thing....families love to get together and you will find Keralites from all over the world packing their bags to visit home or yearning for home!! In the picture , you can see my mom with her helper...my daughter in her toddler years!
Onam Pookalam
You can traditionally  put these beautiful floral carpets on all 10 days of the Onam celebrations but most city folk like myself can manage to make a Pookalam only on Thiruvonam...the  main festive day of  Onam!
Onam Craft- Pookalam
When we shifted from a flat to a house......Onam was sooo much more fun as we had flowering plants growing in our home and we didn't have to use store bought flowers!
Pookalam Preparation
And we actually had a porch for our Pookalam !!

Athapookalam
And that is us...my mum , myself and my kiddo putting our Pookalam! This was taken last year and you can also see my dogs trying to help!
Onam Celebration
I cant show you this year's Pookalam as my camera's battery had run out of charge! But I do have photos of some special Onam crafts!
Onathappan
Along with the Pookalams,a popular symbol of Onam is a  tall pyramidal structure called " Onathappan " or Thrikakkara Appan" which is placed beside the Pookalam. I made this one from air drying natural clay!
Onam Crafts - Kathakali
I also made clay "Kathakali" figure heads for Onam! Kathakali is a spectacular dance form  of Kerala  where the dancers paint their faces in elaborate style and wear beautiful costumes!
For both my Indian and foreign friends....if you ever get a chance to see a live Kathakali dance ....don't miss it ...it is simple amazing!
Onam Crafts - Clay Kathakali
I made my Kathakali heads using a mold and air drying clay and painted them with acrylic paints...which was quite tricky as these are just around 2 inches only!
I made some of these into pendants and some into fridge magnets!
Onam Crafts - Kathakali
I hope you enjoyed seeing and reading a bit about our Onam!!
And here is wishing all my Malayalee friends a Happy Onam!
